Denise Louie Education Center (DLEC) has established a scholarship opportunity for alumni interested in or pursuing higher education. The educational foundation students have built within the DLEC community is the focal point of this scholarship.
DLEC is honored to present the two recipients of this scholarship, Jasmine Chao and Jaci Lo.
Jasmine is a first-year student at the University of Washington, where she plans to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. She aims to apply to medical school and become a pediatrician, as she enjoys learning about children’s medicine and early childhood development. Jasmine shared that her experience attending DLEC shaped her into the person she is today, being taught what it means to have a voice within a diverse community, gaining a deeper cultural understanding of the world around her, and how to thrive as a young woman of color. While the journey ahead may be long, she will continue to endure and seek to earn her place where she wants to be, proudly representing her people, background, and home.
Jaci is currently preparing herself for the rigors of college by taking advanced classes, such as physics and chemistry, at her STEM-based high school. Jaci shared that her ultimate professional goal is to become a biomedical engineer. As a woman studying a male-dominated field, Jaci wishes to break down the barriers and stereotypes upheld in STEM institutions. She aims to pave the way for others who need to see themselves within certain professions and guide a new generation to reach gender equality and engagement in the STEM field. Attending DLEC has helped shape Jaci and her educational journey by giving her a glimpse into being surrounded and inspired by individuals who look like her.
DLEC is grateful to former students such as Jasmine and Jaci for their commitment and aspirations of serving and improving the community. Jasmine and Jaci have encompassed DLEC’s vision of education and empowerment, where students and families reach their full potential so they can advocate for themselves, our community, and the world.
