Play and Learn is a partnership between Denise Louise Education Center and the Seattle Public Library

We are one of the organizations participating and offering Kaleidoscope Play and Learn in King County. This is a program for parents and caregivers of young children to learn and explore together. This facilitated program is designed to support the development of children’s school readiness skills and to provide education and support for parents and caregivers.

Play and Learn is a free program, funded primarily by King County. No enrollment is necessary but children must be accompanied by an adult. No drop-offs or childcare to the group. Play & Learn groups are structure with child-directed free play, coordinated group activity and intentional caregiver learning.

Example of a group:

Free Play

You and your child can explore the various activities and materials set out for the week. Please stay nearby to help facilitate your child’s interaction with others.

Circle Time

You and your child can participate in singing, dancing and listening to a story. For Spanish bilingual group, both Spanish and English will be used during circle time.

Share Time

Caregivers may share thoughts/ideas, community events or resources among the group. Facilitators will provide intentional caregivers learning, seasonal or cultural highlights, simple group activities or crafts, and other safety/health/educational information for caregivers.

What is expected of parents and caregivers?

Please sign in when you arrive at the program so we can make sure to count your participation. While attending Play and Learn it is your responsibility to be with your child and spend time playing and interacting with them. It is important for you to get down on the floor with your child, be at eye level with them and experience activities with them.

Play and Learn is also an opportunity for you to interact with other parents and caregivers. Adults are encouraged to socialize, network and share information with one another.

Consider our staff and facilitators a resource for you. If you would like information about other community activities, topics of interest or concern, please feel free to talk with them.

If you need to change a diaper, please use the diaper changing tables in the adult or family restrooms.

Play and Learn is a program of Denise Louie Education Center and funded by King County. In order to sustain this program as free to the community, we need to collect data on the impact this program has on families. We distribute and collect survey for evaluations once a year. We may use the demographic data for reports and grant writing. While participation is voluntary and anonymous, we appreciate your support.

  • Ashley's class was the first to have Jumpstart students in the classroom. Jumpstart recruits, trains, supervises, and supports college students to work with early childhood programs in low-income communities such as Head Start. Today she is attending Newport High School and wants to be a Jumpstart student when she is in college.
